McDonald’s Coolsingel 44, Rotterdam

The former McDonald’s kiosk on Coolsingel was once declared the ugliest building in Rotterdam. Mei architects and planners designed a new pavilion that has been praised already in fourteen different languages. One of the praises: ‘It looks like an Apple Store’.

The pavilion features a richly decorated facade, just like the historic buildings in the immediate area. Mei architects and planners opted for gold aluminum: chic, vandal-proof and durable. The facade paneling acts as a ‘veil’, with heart-shaped perforations that depict a festive crowd. Lighting behind the panels allows for increased social security.

Inside, a one-piece steel spiral staircase leads from the lobby to the restaurant area on the first floor. From here visitors have a beautiful panoramic view of the Coolsingel. A practical special feature: the pavilion was built in only two months.
