Freebooter, Amsterdam

Freebooter is a biophilic building, situated on a corner lot on Zeeburgereiland, Amsterdam, overlooking the river IJ, and consists of 2 duplex houses with 2 bedrooms, each of 120m2. One of the most important design elements is the use of light. The parametric shape and position of the slats was determined on the basis of a 365-day sun study in order to create optimal sunlight and at the same time preserve the privacy of the residents. Freebooter is the first housing project designed and developed by the Amsterdam architecture and design agency GG-loop.

Freebooter respects both residents and the environment and reconnects them in a balanced ecosystem. This biophilic approach is the key to an innovative design, in which the technical aspects of an environmentally conscious building are balanced with the qualitative experience in the interior; By using natural materials, organic forms, acoustics, proportions and light, a multisensory connection with nature is created.

Compact spaces alternate with open spaces in an optimized floor area / height proportion and sequence with the aim of creating comfort in every room. The floor plan, the "flow" of the rooms and the organic lines have been created with attention to daily use and the typical tasks of the residents.

Pleasant acoustics, warmth and smell are the most important sensory stimuli that are generated by the wooden construction. The transparency of the glass, a reference to water, allows light and thus enhances the experience of the space, and creates a connection with the surrounding waters.

The energy value of the building is close to 0, making it almost passive. This is the result of a combination of 24 solar panels on the roof, high insulation & CO2 absorption, high-quality glass façade and shading system, floor heating at low temperatures, a mechanical and a natural ventilation system. 98% of the wood used is PEFC certified. With 122.5 m3 of wood, the building stores 80 tons of CO2, compensating 700,000 km of exhaust from a mid-range car and the energy consumption of 87 households in 1 year.
