New function for little church from 1840

Church Klein Westinge

A restoration and a new function have preserved the vacant little church of Klein Wetsinge as a piece of architectural heritage. Where once religious believers went to mass, people now hold meetings, cook, eat and enjoy the rural views.

Jelle de Jong architects placed two oval standalone objects in the church hall. One functions as a private meeting room, the other is furnished as a kitchen. The pulpit underwent a makeover and now serves as a contemporary platform. Other additions include a walkway over the old barrel vault beside the clock and a small compartment with benches and a wide windowsill. From this point, visitors can enjoy the view over the surrounding countryside of Groningen.

The creative transformation from church to stopping place meets the need of the local residents for a socio-cultural meeting place. It counterbalances demographic decline and feelings of loneliness.
